Did you know that sleep apnea can actually affect Did you know that sleep apnea can actually affect your hearing? A new study has found that hearing and sleep apnea are actually connected!

A study of 14,000 individuals found that 40% of participants who suffered from sleep apnea had a harder time hearing. While experts aren't exactly sure what causes this correlation, but they believe it could be either reduced blood flow to the ears from blood vessel inflammation via sleep apnea, or damage done to the ears via loud snoring.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, make sure you speak with your doctor right away.
Are you the type that doesn't make your bed each m Are you the type that doesn't make your bed each morning? Research out of the UK says you might be doing it right leaving your bed unmade each morning!

Research out of Kingston University in London found that making your bed each morning traps dust mites within your bed that accumulated overnight. While dust mites are inevitable in any home or room, trapped dust mites can create a breeding ground for the allergens that make you miserable.

The biggest reason to keep the bed unmade is simply because it's best to let it air out. This will dry out any moisture that lingers on the bedding, making it harder for dust mites to survive.

If you INSIST on making your bed, try leaving it unmade for a few hours in the morning, and making it later in the day.

Looking for better sleep tonight? Expose yourself Looking for better sleep tonight? Expose yourself to bright light during the day! The sun helps your body's circadian rhythm. This rhythm helps create the hormones that keep you awake during the day, and help you get to sleep at night.

While sunlight is the best (and of course, cheapest) way to be exposed to the bright lights, using artificial bright lighting can also help. In fact, a study found that adults who had two hours of bright light exposure had two hours of additional sleep and saw an 80% increase in sleep efficiency.

So, while we're in the middle of spring and with summer approaching, make sure to take advantage of the extra bright lights!

Looking to paint your bedroom a new color? If you Looking to paint your bedroom a new color? If you value your sleep, make sure you select a color that isn't too vibrant. This is because vibrant colors will often make it harder to get to sleep.

Bright, vibrant colors such as red, yellow, and orange can elevate moods such as excitement or anger, which can keep you up at night.

If you are insistent on using these kinds of colors, aim for lighter shades to lower the chances of elevating sleep busting moods.

Ever see people in your dreams that you never spok Ever see people in your dreams that you never spoke to and don't even know their name? You've actually seen these people before in the real world.

Your brain isn't capable of "creating" new faces and people, so your brain will use faces it has registered over time to help populate your dreams.

Sure, you might not recognize each face in your dreams, or remember where you saw these people, but you have crossed paths before, likely.

This fact is no April fools joke. The longest *REC This fact is no April fools joke. The longest *RECORDED* time that someone stayed awake for is 11 days and 24 minutes! In 1965, then 16-year-old Randy Gardner stayed awake without the use of stimulants.

This doesn't mean that Gardner went through this record without some issues. Gardner's eyes began to lose focus two days in, and by the fifth day, he began to hallucinate. According to the records kept during his sleepless days, Gardner began showing signs of paranoia, and became expressionless. At the end, when Gardner asked if he would ever try it again, he quickly stated "no."

While there are many people who have claimed to have gone longer, their claims have not been proven due to a lack of records. The Guniess Book of World Records doesn't accept this record due to the extreme dangers it can cause, so if you were thinking of trying to beat the record, think again.

Work already wearing you out? Thinking of taking a Work already wearing you out? Thinking of taking a nap during lunch hour? Aim for about 26 minutes of shut eye.

How was 26 minutes determined to be the sweet spot? NASA! The folks at NASA studied naps to make sure tired pilots weren't endangering themselves and/or their passengers. Their study found that the pilots who napped for these golden 26 minutes were more alert (by 54%) and their job performance also improved (by 34%) compared to the pilots who skipped on naps.

Don't have 26 minutes to spare for that power nap? No need to worry. NASA says that 10-20 minutes should suffice. Even if you just close your eyes and let your body rest, you can do you muscles, brain cells and organs a favor. Hey, if it's good enough for astronauts, it's good enough for the rest of us!

You've probably heard the saying "wake up and smel You've probably heard the saying "wake up and smell the coffee" before. There's a good reason why you hear "wake up" first. That's because the deeper you sleep, the less likely you are to have aromas wake you up.

While there aren't too many studies on the sense of smell and how it affects sleep (particularly if it can wake you up), scientists have noticed that the deeper the sleep, the lower the chances that senses will wake you from your sleep.

While you're in a light sleep (stage N1), it's much easier for your senses to wake you up from your sleep. Once you hit REM sleep (stage N3), there needs to be more a jolt for your senses to interrupt your sleep to cause you to wake up (louder sounds or more shaking for example).

While other senses may wake you up from REM sleep, stronger smells likely won't disrupt your REM sleep. While there are expections to this, it's currently unknown why the sense of smell is unlikely to not interrupt a deep sleep.

Have you ever suddenly wake up due to a smell? If so, what was that smell?

As we head into the weekend, some of us like to be As we head into the weekend, some of us like to be up later to have more time to socialize and relax knowing that we do not have to be up for work in a few hours. So we may intentionally avoid sleep. For some, sleep is avoided over actual fear and anxiety over sleep. This is known as "Somniphobia".

Somniphobia is likely caused due to different anxieties revolving around sleep. This can be anxiety regarding anticipating work deadlines or other daily stressors, having relationship issues, or even thinking about how much you need to sleep (focusing on the need to sleep makes it harder to sleep).

If you fully dread going to bed each night, make sure you speak with a professional to get the support you need. Lacking sleep over the long haul can be detrimental to both physical and mental health.
